CALDWELL,
N.J. - Freshman forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor),
pictured, recorded a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds, including 17
in the second half, to pace the Caldwell College men's basketball team
to victory over the University of Sciences, 68-56 in a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference game Tuesday evening at the Newman Center. The win
gives Caldwell a conference record of 12-6 and 13-13 overall, while the
Devils drop to 11-15, 10-9 CACC.
The first half remained close for the first 17 minutes, with Caldwell
leading by as many as five. After Pete Adams' lay-up made the score
19-18 Caldwell with 3:09 on the clock, the Cougars closed out the half
with eight straight points, including four from sophomore guard Jean
Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood). USP became the second Caldwell
opponent this season to fail to reach 20 points in the first half,
shooting just 31.6 percent from the floor.
A lay-up by Georges pushed the Cougar lead to 31-20 early in the second
half. USP countered with an 11-5 run sparked by six points from Eric
Cangelosi to make it 36-31 Caldwell with 15:43 to play. That's as close
as the Devils would get, as the Cougars built the second-half lead up to
as many as 16 while shooting 11-of-18 (61.1 %) from the field in the
second half.
Perez was 6-of-12 from the field and 11-of-13 from the free throw line
en route to his seventh game with at least 20 points. Georges finished
with 14 points, while senior guard Ron Harris (Trenton,
NJ/Trenton Central) had four assists and two steals to go with six
points. Harris now has 668 career points in his two seasons at Caldwell,
moving him past Steve Soutter for 21st on the Cougars' all-time scoring
list. Cangelosi scored 14 points to lead USP in the loss.
The Cougars will play their final regular-season home game on Thursday,
Feb. 24, when they host league-leading Holy Family at 8:00 p.m. in the
Newman Center.
