NEW CASTLE, Del. – Five players scored in double-figures as the Caldwell College men’s basketball team closed out the 2004-05 regular season with a 77-65 win over Wilmington College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game Saturday night at the Pratt Center. The win gives the Cougars a 15-13 record overall, including a 14-6 mark in the CACC, while the Wildcats fall to 2-25, 1-19 CACC. Caldwell finished in third place in the conference and will host a first-round game in the CACC Tournament on Tuesday, Mar. 1.

Wilmington led for most of the first half and held a 25-18 advantage with 4:50 remaining. But a 14-2 Caldwell run to close out the half allowed the Cougars to take a 32-27 lead at the half. Junior forward Teren Scudder (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) tallied six points and sophomore guard Jean Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood) had five points in the run, while senior guard Ron Harris (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) scored 12 points in the first half.

The Wildcats got back in the game by opening the second half with a 13-5 run, sparked by six points from Bradford Morris, to give Wilmington a 40-37 lead with 14:49 left. With the game tied at 43-43, the Cougars took control of the game with a 19-5 spree, as junior guard Mark Kelly (Oakhurst, NJ/Oakhurst), pictured, scored nine straight points on a pair of threes and a conventional three-point play. The Wildcats would never get closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Cougars went on to win their fourth straight win and sixth in their last seven games.

Harris finished with a game-high 16 points, while Kelly registered 13 points and eight rebounds. Georges and freshman forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor) each tallied 12 points, and Scudder matched his season high with 10 points. Morris led Wilmington with 14 points in the loss.

The Cougars’ first-round game in the CACC Tournament begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Newman Center, which will also serve as host of the semifinals and finals of the CACC Tournament on Mar. 4-5.
