MEN'S HOOPS PICKED TO FINISH FOURTH, PEREZ NAMED
PRESEASON ALL-CACC
11-8-05
CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team was tabbed to finish
fourth in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference 2005-06 Preseason
Coaches' Poll, the conference announced on Monday at its annual Media
Day, held at Continental Airlines Arena. The league's 12 head coaches
also voted Cougars' sophomore forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor,
NJ/Egg Harbor), right, to the Preseason All-CACC squad.
The Cougars, who went 17-15 overall and 14-6 in the CACC to take third
place last season, received 107 points in the voting. Defending
regular-season and tournament champion Bloomfield College was picked to
repeat, followed by conference newcomer Philadelphia University and Holy
Family. Philadelphia joins the CACC this season after competing in the
New York Collegiate Athletic Conference last season.
As a freshman, Perez recorded team highs of 16.2 points and 6.1 rebounds
per game en route to earning CACC Newcomer of the Year and second team
all-CACC and all-Met honors. His 517 points are the most scored by a
freshman at Caldwell and the fourth-highest single-season total in the
program's history.
The
Cougars, coached by Mark Corino, came within one game of earning
the program's first automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by advancing to
the CACC Tournament finals, where they lost to Bloomfield. Along with
Perez, Corino and the Cougars return four starters, including senior
point guard Kelvin Reese (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck), plus key reserve
Mark Kelly (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.). Corino begins his 18th
season as the Cougars' head coach needing three wins to reach 300
victories at Caldwell and eight wins to become just the second active
men's college basketball coach in New Jersey with 400 career victories.
The Cougars open the season at Disney's Division II Tip-Off Classic on
Friday, Nov. 11, when they play Southern Indiana at 6:00 p.m. in
Orlando, Fla.
