CALDWELL, N.J. - A high school boys' basketball game between
Rutherford and St. Joseph of the Palisades will be played immediately
following a college basketball doubleheader between Caldwell College and Goldey-Beacom College this Saturday, Jan. 21, in the George R. Newman
Center. The women's game kicks things off at 1:00 p.m., with the men's
game at 3:00 p.m. The high school game, which is scheduled to start at
5:00 p.m., features a match-up between former Caldwell standouts
Brian Gaccione, who coaches Rutherford, and Damian Kennedy,
who coaches St. Joseph. Both players served as team captains at
Caldwell College under Cougars' head coach Mark Corino.
Gaccione played at Caldwell from 1991 to 1995, helping the Cougars win
three Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference titles. He played a big
role on the Cougars' 1993 NAIA District 31 championship team that
advanced to the national tournament for the first time. Caldwell's
all-time leader in assists with 803 in his career, Gaccione ranks 21st
in career scoring with 688 points. His Rutherford squad is currently
5-5.
Kennedy also played four years at Caldwell, and was the starting point
guard on the 1996 squad that captured the CACC Tournament and qualified
for the national tournament. A 1996 graduate, Kennedy served as a
history teacher at St. Joseph for six years before becoming a vice
principal at the school in 2005. He is in his seventh season as boys'
basketball coach at St. Joseph, which is currently 6-5 on the season.
