box score
PHILADELPHIA,
Pa. - Junior guard Jean
Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood) and sophomore forward Manny Perez
(Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor), left, each tallied 19 points as the Caldwell
College men's basketball team defeated league-leading Philadelphia University,
74-60 Tuesday evening in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game. The
win is the fourth straight for the Cougars (7-8 overall, 3-4 CACC) and the
399th victory in head coach Mark Corino's career. Corino needs one more
win to become just the second active men's college basketball coach in New
Jersey with 400 career victories.
The Cougars jumped out to a 15-2 lead to start the game, only to see the
Rams battle back and cut the deficit to 30-28 by halftime. Hot shooting
at the start of the second half allowed the Cougars to take control of
the game and hold on for the victory. Georges, senior guard Mark
Kelly (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) and sophomore guard Michael Wise
(Whitesboro, NJ/Middletownship) each hit three-pointers as the Cougars
hit 4-of-7 from beyond the arc in the second half. Both teams shot the
ball well, with the Rams making 52.3 percent and the Cougars hitting
51.0 percent of their field goal attempts. The win marks the third
straight game that Caldwell has shot better than 50.0 percent from the
floor. The Cougars also forced 22 Philadelphia turnovers while
committing just 11.
Perez came off the bench to make 8-of-10 from the field, while George
hit three three-pointers in matching Perez for team honors with 19
points. Kelly also made three threes and finished with 13 points. Senior
forward Teren Scudder (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) led the
Cougars with six rebounds. Tayron Thomas and Christian Burns led the
Rams with 22 and 20 points, respectively.
Corino will attempt to earn his 400th victory on Thursday, Jan. 12, when
the Cougars play at Dominican College in another CACC battle. Game time
is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
