PISCATAWAY,
N.J. - Junior guard Jean Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood),
pictured, scored a game-high 19 points as the Caldwell College men's
basketball team lost to Division I Rutgers University, 95-56 in an
exhibition game Wednesday evening at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
The game marked the first meeting between the two schools.
The Scarlet Knights took control of the game midway through the first
half with a 10-0 run that gave Rutgers a 38-16 lead with 6:24 left in
the half. Caldwell answered with a 9-2 run of their own, buoyed by six
points from Georges. After five straight points by Rutgers made the
score 45-25 with 3:45 remaining, the teams played even for the rest of
the half, thanks in part to a pair of three-pointers from senior guard
Mark Kelly (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.). Kelly's second three came
with 25 seconds on the clock for a halftime score of 55-35 in favor of
the host Knights.
In the second half, a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Adam
Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) cut the lead to 60-43 with 17
minutes left in the game. But Rutgers scored 18 unanswered points en
route to a 26-2 run.
Georges, who notched a career-high 21 points in the Cougars'
season-opening loss to ninth-ranked Southern Indiana on Nov. 11, was
5-of-8 from the field, including 2-of-4 from three-point range.
Sophomore forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior) finished
with 11 points and a team-best five rebounds. Quincy Douby and Marquis
Webb each tallied 14 points for Rutgers as six players scored in double
figures for the Scarlet Knights.
The Cougars return to regular-season action on Tuesday, Nov. 22, when
they host East Stroudsburg University in the home opener. Game time is
set for 6:00 p.m. at the George R. Newman Center.
