MEN'S HOOPS TO FACE RUTGERS IN EXHIBITION TONIGHT
11-16-05
CALDWELL,
N.J. – The Caldwell College men’s basketball team will play an
exhibition game against Division I Rutgers University tonight at 7:30
p.m. at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J. This is the
first time the two teams have met in any game, regular season or
exhibition.
The Cougars enter tonight's game with a record of 0-3 after opening the
season at the Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic this past weekend. A
different player stepped up each night to pace the Cougars in scoring,
with junior guard Jean Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood) leading
the way with a career-high 21 points against Southern Indiana. Sophomore
forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NJ/Our Savior) matched his career
best in the loss to Presbyterian, scoring 17 points while shooting
7-of-12 from the field. In the tournament’s final game versus
Bridgeport, sophomore forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg
Harbor) tallied 24 points and a career-high 15 rebounds to lead
Caldwell. Over the three games Perez, who also had three steals against
Bridgeport, averaged 14.0 points and 9.3 boards per contest.
Although the Cougars have never faced Rutgers or any other team from the
Big East, this is not the first time the men's basketball team has
played a Division I opponent. During the early years of the program in
the late 1980's, Caldwell College faced several Division I teams from
the region, such as Monmouth, Wagner and Towson.
The Cougars will resume the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 22 in the
home-opener against East Stroudsburg University. Tip-off is set for 6:00
p.m. at the George R. Newman Center.
