BUENA VISTA, Fla. – The Caldwell College men’s basketball team opened
the 2005-06 season with an 88-71 loss to Southern Indiana University in
the ninth annual Disney Division II Tip-Off Classic Friday afternoon at
the Milk House. The Cougars, who went 17-15 last season, are now 0-1,
while the Screaming Eagles, ranked ninth in the NABC Division II
Preseason Poll after a 27-5 campaign in 2004-05, improve to 1-0.
Southern Indiana forced 15 first-half turnovers to lead by as many as 14
points in the game’s opening period. But the Cougars used three-pointers
by sophomore Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middletownship) and
junior Jean Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood) to spark an 11-5 run
to close out the half trailing 39-32. Georges tallied 14 points in the
first half, while Southern Indiana forward Chris Thompson poured in 17
points in the game’s first 20 minutes.
Caldwell began the second half with lay-ups from sophomore forward
Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor) and sophomore guard Adam
Sabree (Detroit, MI/Renaissance) to cut the lead to 39-36. But that
is as close as the Cougars would get, as the Eagles used a 9-0 run
midway through the second half to take a commanding 59-42 advantage with
12:20 remaining. Caldwell came to within 12 points three times but could
not get any closer, as Southern Indiana shot 76.2 percent from the floor
in the second half.
Georges, pictured, who scored the Cougars’ first eight points of the
game, finished with a career-high 21 points while making 4-of-5 from
three-point range. Perez finished with 13 points, while senor guard
Mark Kelly (Oakhurst, NJ/Ocean Twp.) had 11 points, including three
three-pointers. Thompson was virtually unstoppable, hitting 13-of-14
from the field for a career-best 35 points and 11 rebounds in the
victory. Guard David Bryant added 16 points for Southern Indiana.
The Cougars continue play at the Tip-Off Classic with a consolation
semifinal game against Presbyterian College on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 3:30
p.m.
