COUGARS TO PLAY NO. 2 BENTLEY IN NCAA REGIONAL
3-5-07
CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team will play Bentley
College in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II Northeast
Region Tournament, which begins Saturday, March 10 at Bentley's Dana
Athletics Center in Waltham, Mass. The Cougars (19-11), who won the
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament on Mar. 3 to earn
the automatic bid to the regional, are participating in the NCAA
Tournament for the first time in the program's 20-year history.
Bentley (29-0), ranked second nationally, is one of only two
unbeaten teams in all of Division II.
The Cougars, seeded eighth, and the top-seeded Falcons play in
Saturday's third game at 6:00 p.m. The quarterfinal winners play in
the semifinals on Sunday, Mar. 11 at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., with
the final played on Tuesday, Mar. 13 at 7:00 p.m. All eight regional
champions will advance to the Elite Eight in Springfield, Mass., on
Mar. 21-24.
In Saturday's CACC Tournament final, the Cougars prevailed in a
hard-fought game against the University of Sciences, winning 61-60
at Dominican College. Freshman forward Sam Cricelli
(Brighton, England/Culham), who scored a team-high 14 points, put
Caldwell ahead for good by tapping in his own missed free throw with
22 seconds remaining. Cricelli joined senior guard Jean Georges
(Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood), the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and
junior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior) on the
all-Tournament team.
The CACC title is Caldwell's sixth conference championship overall
but its first as an NCAA Division II member. The Cougars, coached by
Mark Corino, advanced to the national tourney five times
prior to 2003, when Caldwell made the transition from the NAIA to
the NCAA.
Tickets are $8.00 for adults and $3.00 for students and children,
and are available at the Dana Athletics Center on game day.
