CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team defeated Dowling
College, 65-54 in the second day of the Commerce Bank Cougar Classic
Sunday afternoon at the George R. Newman Center. Senior guard
Jean Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood) was named the tournament’s
Most Valuable Player award after scoring 20 points. The victory
completes a 2-0 weekend at the Cougar Classic for Caldwell, which
improves to 4-1 on the season. The Golden Lions fall to 2-5 with the
loss.
The Cougars led by as many as 10 points in the first half,
eventually taking a 29-20 advantage into the break. But the Golden
Lions started the second half with seven straight points, capped by
a three-pointer by guard David Seagers, to pull to within two
points. After Caldwell built the lead back to 36-29, threes from
Seagers and Leonard Lans helped Dowling cut the lead to one, 38-37
with 11:40 to play. Georges answered with a three-pointer that
ignited a 12-2 Caldwell run that made the score 50-39 with eight
minutes remaining. The Cougars never let the Golden Lions back in
the game after that, as Caldwell would lead by as many as 16 points.
Georges tallied 42 points in two games this weekend, giving him 993
points for his career. He has scored at least 20 points in all five
of the Cougars' games this season. Junior forward B.J. Suchy
(Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior), pictured, led all scorers with 21
points, while freshman forward Sam Cricelli (Brighton,
