CALDWELL,
N.J. - Caldwell College men's basketball players Jean Georges
(Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood) and Sam Cricelli
(Brighton, England/Culham) were named the Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference's Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively,
the conference announced yesterday. Georges and Cricelli helped to
lead the Cougars to the CACC Tournament championship this past
weekend, which qualified them for the NCAA Northeast Region
Tournament that begins this Saturday.
Georges, a senior guard, was chosen the tournament's Most Valuable Player after
averaging 16.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.3 steals over three
tourney games. An all-CACC first team selection, Georges led the
Cougars with 18 points in a 74-65 first-round win at Goldey-Beacom
on Feb. 27. In Caldwell's 73-64 upset victory over top-seeded
Philadelphia University in the semifinals, he scored 20 points and
grabbed seven rebounds. Georges tallied 12 points in the title game,
a 61-60 thriller over the University of Sciences. He has scored
1,431 points in his career at Caldwell to rank fifth on the Cougars'
all-time scoring list.
Cricelli, a freshman forward, receives the conference's Rookie of
the Week award for the fourth time this season. He averaged 10.3
points and 5.6 rebounds in three tournament games to earn a spot on
the all-Tournament team. In the final, Cricelli scored what proved
to be the game-winning points when he tapped in the rebound off his
own missed free throw with 22 seconds left to make the score 61-60.
He finished with a team-best 14 points to go with nine rebounds in
the championship game.
The Cougars play No. 2 Bentley College in the quarterfinals of the
NCAA Northeast Region Tournament on Saturday, Mar. 10 in Waltham,
Mass. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
