NYACK,
N.Y. - Senior guard Jean Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood)
scored a game-high 22 points as the Caldwell College men's
basketball team defeated Nyack College, 67-56 in a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference match-up Thursday night at the Bowman Center.
The Cougars, who went 24-of-28 from the free throw line to end a
three-game losing streak, are now 8-7 on the season, including a 4-5
mark in the conference. The Warriors drop to 4-11, 2-5 CACC with the
loss.
Caldwell held the upper hand for most of the first half but never
led by more than six points. A basket by freshman forward Sam
Cricelli (Brighton, England/Culham) with just under a minute
left in the half gave the Cougars a 25-22 lead, which they would
eventually take into the locker room at the break.
A 12-0 run by the Cougars early in the second half, sparked by six
points from junior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our
Savior), put Caldwell in front 41-29 at the 13:09 mark of the second
half. Nyack answered with two straight threes from Josh Tate that
keyed 10 straight points to cut the deficit to 41-35 with 9:21 left.
But Georges ended the run with a three of his own, followed by four
free throws that helped Caldwell build the lead back to 14, 50-36
with 7:20 to go. The Warriors came within seven with one minute
left, but the Cougars made 6-of-7 from the free throw line in the
final minute of play to lock up the win and snap a three-game losing
streak.
Caldwell took advantage of a 28-12 disparity in free throw attempts,
making a season-high 85.7 percent from the charity stripe compared
to 9-of-12 (75.0 percent) for Nyack. Georges was 9-of-11 from the
line en route to his eighth game over 20 points this season.
Cricelli and Suchy each finished with 14 points and seven rebounds
for the Cougars, while John Van Dunk led the Warriors with 17
points.
Caldwell host Post University on Thursday, Jan. 18 in a CACC game at
the George R. Newman Center. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m.
