PISCATAWAY, N.J. - A 13-0 run midway through the second half broke open a close game and helped Rutgers University defeat Caldwell College 64-41 in a men's basketball exhibition game Wednesday night at the Louis Brown Athletic Center. The Cougars, who lost last season's match-up with the Scarlet Knights by 39 points, will play another Division I team from the Big East on Saturday when they face Seton Hall University at Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J.

Caldwell scored the first five points of the game and took a 13-11 lead on a three-pointer by freshman guard John Reed (Wall, NJ/Wall) with 7:37 left in the first half. But Rutgers used a 13-6 run to close out the half to make the score 24-19 in favor of the Scarlet Knights at the break. Junior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior) scored a team-high eight points, including a three-pointer, to pace the Cougars in the first half.

Caldwell started the second half well, eventually tying the game at 26-26 on a lay-up from junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg Harbor) with just under 14 minutes to play. After a three-point play by Hamady N'Diaye capped an 8-2 run for Rutgers, freshman center Wojciech Bocianowski (Warsaw, Poland/Life Center Academy) put back a missed lay-up to make the score 34-30 with 9:57 remaining. But the Scarlet Knights took control of the game by scoring the next 13 points, punctuated by a three-pointer from Anthony Farmer, for a 47-30 advantage with 7:25 on the clock. The Cougars came to within 12 points on a three from Suchy but would get no closer, as Rutgers scored seven more unanswered points to put the game out of reach.

Suchy, pictured, led all scorers with 15 points, while Perez tallied nine points and a team-best seven boards for Caldwell. Junior guard Hans Stelzer (Seldon, NY/Our Savior) swiped five steals in the loss. Marquis Webb tallied 14 points to pace Rutgers, which shot 56.0 percent from the field compared to 29.0 percent for Caldwell in the second half.

The Cougars will face Seton Hall in the final tune-up before the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 11. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J.
