RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's basketball team lost to
Division I Seton Hall University, 91-52 in an exhibition game Saturday
afternoon at Continental Airlines Arena. The game, which is the final
preseason contest for the Cougars, is Caldwell's second exhibition
against a Big East team this week. The Cougars played at Rutgers
University on Wednesday.
Pressure defense by the Pirates (1-0) forced 17 first-half turnovers and
allowed Seton Hall to jump out to a 19-4 lead in the game's first seven
minutes. The advantage would grow to 23 points before a basket by junior
guard Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ/Middletownship) and a pair of
free throws from junior forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ/Egg
Harbor) made it 38-19 at the half. Two three pointers by Jamar Nutter
keyed an 18-6 Seton Hall run to start the second half that resulted in a
56-25 lead. The Cougars would never get closer than 28 points the rest
of the way, as the Pirates finished the game with a 10-3 spurt.
Perez, pictured, tallied 15 points and seven boards to lead the Cougars.
Senior guard Jean Georges (Vauxhal, NJ/Spotswood) added 11
points, and junior forward B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY/Our Savior)
recorded nine points and seven rebounds. Seton Hall's Brian Laing led
all scorers with 19 points, as the Pirates scored 36 of their points off
Caldwell turnovers.
The Cougars begin the 2006-07 campaign next week, when they play in the
Colorado School of Mines Tournament in Golden, Colo., beginning Friday,
Nov. 17.
