Coach Dean Johnson
University of New England '86
20th Season
Dean Johnson is entering his 20th year as an assistant
men’s basketball coach and his 16th season as head coach of the
women’s softball team. He has also been the Associate Athletic
Director in charge of NCAA compliance for the last nine years.
“We wouldn’t have the success we’ve enjoyed over the years
without the tireless efforts of Coach Johnson,” said Corino. “I
don’t think people realize what a hard worker Dean is. His
loyalty and commitment to this school cannot be overstated.”
Johnson’s commitment to the College was recognized in 2008, when he received the prestigious Caldwell Cup from
Caldwell College President Sister Patrice Werner.
Johnson came to Caldwell in 1990 after coaching on the high
school and college levels. He served as an assistant coach for
the 1988-89 University of New England’s men’s basketball team
that won a school-record 24 games and was recently inducted into
the UNE Athletics Hall of Fame. As Caldwell’s softball coach,
Johnson has compiled a record of 440-218-2 in 15 seasons while
capturing four Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament
crowns. A four-time CACC Coach of the Year honoree, Johnson led
the Cougars to the NCAA Northeast Region title and a berth in
the Women’s College World Series in 2004.
A native of Belgrade Lakes, Maine, Johnson set many basketball
records as a point guard at the University of New England in
Biddeford, Maine. Johnson graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of
Arts in History and Secondary Education. He earned a Master’s
degree from Caldwell College in 1997.
Johnson resides in Denville, N.J., with his wife Christine and
daughter Katelyn.
Assistant
Coach Joe Scott
Union College '89
Eighth season
Joe Scott, who was an assistant coach at Caldwell from
1998 to 2005, returns to the Cougars' coaching staff after
spending four seasons as the head coach at Union County College
in Cranford, N.J.
Scott had a record of 48-70 at Union, including a 42-53 mark against fellow
Division 3 junior colleges. During his tenure, six players received
all-Garden State Athletic Conference honors and one player received the 2008
Robert Zifchak Award as the outstanding male scholar-athlete in the National
Junior College Athletic Association Region 19. Two of his players moved on
to play at four-year colleges.
During Scott's time at Caldwell, the Cougars experienced some of their best
seasons, including the 2001-02 campaign in which Caldwell went 25-6,
captured the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference title and won its
first-round game in the NAIA national tournament. The Cougars also won a
CACC crown and advanced to the national tournament in 1999, Scott's first
year with the team. He then spent the 2000-01 season as the head coach at
Union Catholic High School before returning to Caldwell in 2001. Scott
also was instrumental in recruiting Jean Georges, an all-CACC first
team guard on Caldwell's 2007 squad that won the CACC Tournament, and
Manny Perez, the program's second-leading scorer and a four-time all-CACC
forward.
Prior to coming to Caldwell, Scott was an assistant coach at
Rutgers-Newark in 1998 and at Stevens Institute of Technology
from 1993-97. He graduated from Union College in 1989 and earned
a Master's in Counseling Education from SUNY-Oneonta in 1990.
Along with his duties at Caldwell, Scott is a career counselor
at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. He resides in
Iselin, N.J., with his wife Kate.
Assistant
Coach Bruce Hamburger
Kean University '84
Second season
Bruce
Hamburger is back at Caldwell after spending two seasons as
an assistant coach for the New York Liberty of the WNBA.
Hamburger was as assistant for the Cougar squad that won the
2007 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament and
advanced to the NCAA Northeast Regional.
Along with his time at Caldwell and in the WNBA, Hamburger
brings over 20 years of coaching experience to the Cougars’
staff. Before coming to Caldwell prior to the 2006-07 season, he
served as the head men’s basketball coach at Kean University for
11 years. The all-time winningest coach at Kean with a record of
140-135, Hamburger coached his alma mater to four appearances in
the ECAC Tournament, winning the ECAC title in 2005 before
advancing to the finals in 2006. He also led Kean to an
appearance in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament in
2001.
Prior to coaching at Kean, Hamburger was an assistant at Seton
Hall University under P.J. Carlesimo for nine years, beginning
in 1986. The Pirates won two Big East Tournament titles and made
six appearances in the NCAA Tournament during his tenure,
including the 1989 run to the NCAA championship game. Hamburger
began his coaching career in 1984 at Trenton State, where he was
an assistant under Kevin Bannon for two seasons.
Hamburger graduated from Kean in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts
degree in physical education. He also holds a Master’s degree in
Counseling Education from Seton Hall. In addition to his role as
an assistant basketball coach, Hamburger coaches the men’s
and women’s tennis teams at Caldwell.
A native of Maplewood, N.J., Hamburger currently lives in New
York City.
