EARLY GOAL HELPS CALDWELL BEAT KUTZTOWN, 1-0

CALDWELL, N.J. - Senior Roman Veselinov (Varna, Bulgaria) scored the game's only goal in the fourth minute as the Caldwell College men's soccer team defeated Kutztown University, 1-0 in a non-conference match Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars improved to 7-4-2, while the Golden Bears dropped to 7-6-2.

Just 3:55 after the game's opening whistle, Veselinov took a pass from freshman Christian Motte (Lima, Peru), who had dribbled deep down the left flank. Veselinov's shot from 20 yards was deflected by Kutztown goalkeeper Jason Sherman, but it had enough momentum to roll under Sherman and into the goal. It was Veselinov's first tally of the season.

The Cougars received a blow midway through the first half when sophomore Bard Skjelstad (Bodo, Norway) received his second yellow card of the game, forcing Caldwell to play a man down for the remainder of the contest. But the Cougar defense was stingy in front of junior goalkeeper Mike Turdo (West Paterson, NJ/Passaic Valley), who was required to make only one save after Skjelstad's ejection.

Kutztown's best chance to tie the game came in the 88th minute, when a series of Golden Bear passes found Mike McCabe alone in the penalty area to the right of the Cougar goal. But McCabe's shot went wide of the mark.

Turdo finished with two saves for his fourth shutout of the season. Sherman had one save for Kutztown, who were out-shot 9-7 by Caldwell.

The Cougars return to action on Monday, Oct. 18, when they travel to face Molloy College at 3:30 p.m.
