9-23-04

CALDWELL, N.J. - Sophomore forward Bard Skjelstad (Bodo, Norway) scored three goals in the second half to help Caldwell College come from behind to beat LIU-Southampton 3-1 in a non-conference men's soccer match on Thursday at Caldwell Field. The Cougars improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Colonials drop to 2-4-1.

Richard Dell gave LIU-Southampton an early lead in the 15th minute when he took a pass from Terence Liu and hit a shot from the right of the goal from 18 yards out that beat Cougars' goalkeeper Mike Turdo (West Paterson, NJ/Passaic Valley) to his right. Caldwell pressed to net the equalizer in the first half, out-shooting the Colonials 7-3 in the first 45 minutes.

But it wasn't until the 59th minute when senior Nolan Osorio (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Hills) sent a throw-in into the penalty area from the left sideline. Skjelstad won the race to the ball and headed it into the goal for his first tally of the season. Less than six minutes later, Skjelstad pounced on a loose ball and blasted a shot from 30 yards out that beat John Incandela to his right and went into the left corner of the goal.

Again, Skjelstad wasted little time in getting back on the scoreboard, completing the hat trick just 1:01 after his second tally. Skjelstad's header from the left side was blocked in front of the goal. Sophomore Miguel Walker (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Wolmer's) took a shot off the rebound that was blocked, but that rebound ended up on the foot of Skjelstad, who buried the ball into the back of the net from six yards out.

Turdo made three saves for the Cougars, who are ranked eighth in the New England Region by the NSCAA/adidas Regional Rankings. Incandela made six saves for the Colonials. The Cougars ended up out-shooting LIU_Southampton 16-9 for the game.

Caldwell College returns to action this Saturday, when they face Wilmington College on the road in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
