WALKER, JIRAS NAMED TO ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT TEAMS

N.J. - Junior midfielder Miguel Walker (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Wolmer's)
was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 first
team in the College Division, the College Sports Information Directors
of America (CoSIDA) announced today. Walker now becomes eligible for
Academic All-America honors along with other student-athletes named to
the all-District first teams. Also, sophomore defender Jan Marco
Jiras (Lima, Peru) was chosen to the Academic All-District 2
second team.
Student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or
higher and be significant contributors to their teams in order to be
considered for Academic All-District honors. The teams are selected in
voting by the members of CoSIDA. District 2 includes NCAA Division II
and III colleges and NAIA colleges in Delaware, the District of
Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia
Walker, who has two assists while starting 12 games for the Cougars
this season, has a cumulative GPA of 3.963 while majoring in financial
economics. This past spring, he was chosen an Arthur Ashe Jr.
Scholar-Athlete for soccer by Black Issues in Higher Education for
athletic and academic achievement as well as contributing to the
community and on campus. Last fall, Walker earned a spot on the
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference All-Academic Team. As a
standout midfielder for the Cougars, Walker has started 49 of his 50
games played in three seasons, and was named to the all-CACC team in
2003.
Jiras
is a two-time all-CACC second team defender who has a 3.975 GPA in
business administration. Through 16 games this season, Jiras has
tallied two goals and one assist for five points, including the
game-winning goal against Molloy. He earned second team all-CACC
honors as a freshman after recording five goals and two assists for 12
points.
Walker and Jiras lead the Cougars into a semifinal match-up with
Felician College in the CACC Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 3 at 4:00
p.m. at Tryon Field in Rutherford, N.J.
