FOUR COUGARS RECEIVE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS
11-2-06
CALDWELL, N.J. - Four Caldwell College men's soccer players were
named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 2 teams in
voting done by members of the College Sports Information Directors
of America. Juniors Nicholas Harriott (St. Catherine,
Jamaica/Campion) and Jan Marco Jiras (Lima, Peru) were
selected to the first team, while senior Miguel Walker (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Wolmer's)
and sophomore Asgeir Ofstad
(Trondheim, Norway) made the second team.
Student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of at
least 3.20 and be a starter or significant reserve to be nominated.
Harriott, Jiras and the other first team all-District honorees will
be on the ballot for the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American
teams.
Harriott played in 17 games while starting 12 for the Cougars, who
finished the season 12-6-1. After battling injuries during the
middle of the season, he finished the season strong, scoring in each
of the Cougars' last three games to earn a spot on the Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference all-Tournament team. A biology major,
Harriott made the CACC all-Academic Team last fall.
Jiras turned in a strong season despite missing eight games as a
result of a broken clavicle. He started all 11 games in which he
played, tallying a goal and two assists. Also a member of the 2005
CACC all-Academic team and a two-time all-CACC second team choice as
a defender, Jiras was named to the Academic All-District second team
a year ago. He is majoring in Business Administration at the
College.
Ofstad is the leader of a backline that allowed just 17 goals in
19 games this season. Last year's CACC Newcomer of the Year and a
second team all-CACC and all-Region honoree in 2005, Ofstad recently
was selected to the all-CACC first team. He is majoring in English.
Walker was an Academic all-District first team choice last fall. The Cougars' starting center midfielder for
four years and their captain for the past two, Walker was named to
the all-CACC second team this past season. He is a two-time CACC all-Academic Team member and an
Arthur Ashe Scholar Athlete honoree in 2004. Walker has a goal and
four assists in 67 games as a Cougar.
