CALDWELL,
N.J. - Senior forward J.P. Herring (Barnegat, NJ/Southern
Regional) scored in the 87th minute to break a scoreless tie and
give the Caldwell College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over
American International College in a non-conference match Monday
afternoon at Caldwell Field. With the win, the Cougars improve to
8-5-1 overall, while the Yellow Jackets drop to 6-6-1 on the season.
The game-winner came off a throw-in taken by sophomore defender
Kagiso Rhenoster (Mafikeng, South Africa/Mmbatho) from the
right. Senior forward Bard Skjelstad (Bodo, Norway) played
the ball back to Rhenoster, who found Herring in the Yellow Jackets'
penalty area. Herring collected Rhenoster's pass and put the ball
into the goal with 3:45 to play for his third goal of the season.
The goal was scored just 41 seconds after AIC's James Geary received
his second yellow card and was ejected, leaving the Yellow Jackets
with 10 players.
The Cougars out-shot AIC 17-8, as Michael Murphy made seven saves in
goal for the Yellow Jackets. Junior goalkeeper John Plaugic
(Kearny, NJ/Kearny) recorded four saves for his third shutout of the
season.
Caldwell is back in action on Thursday, Oct. 12, when the Cougars
host Bloomfield College. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at
Caldwell Field.
