WALKER, HARRIOTT, JIRAS NAMED ARTHUR ASHE SPORTS SCHOLARS
5-3-07
CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College senior Miguel Walker (St.
Catherine, Jamaica/Wolmer's) and juniors Nicholas Harriott
(St. Catherine, Jamaica/Campion) and Jan Marco Jiras (Lima,
Peru) were selected Arthur Ashe Sports Scholars by Diverse:
Issues in Higher Education magazine, the publication announced.
All three Cougars were named to the men's soccer first team.
The Arthur Ashe Jr. Scholar Athlete Award was created to honor
student-athletes of color who achieve athletically and academically
while contributing to the community and on campus. The award is
named after the late world-renowned tennis player who became an
activist for civil rights around the world after his playing career
ended. To be included, students have to compete in an
intercollegiate sport, maintain a cumulative grade point average of
at least 3.2 and be active on their campuses or in their
communities. This year, approximately 600 male and female
student-athletes from across the country were nominated.
This is the second time Walker has received the Arthur Ashe Sports
Scholar award, having been named to the men's soccer first team in
2005. A financial economics major at Caldwell, Walker has been named
Academic all-District twice and is a two-time member of the Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference all-Academic Team. He has been active
in student government and the International Student Organization,
for which he has served as president. The Cougars' starting center
midfielder for four years and their captain for the past two, Walker
was named to the all-CACC second team this past season. He is a
two-time CACC all-Academic Team member
Harriott, a biology major, also has been included on the CACC
all-Academic team the past two seasons. This past fall, he earned
Academic All-District first team honors and was a nominee for ESPN
the Magazine Academic All-American accolades. He currently serves as
the president of ISO and also tutors students in several subjects.
This past season, Harriott played in 17 games while starting 12 in
the midfield for the Cougars. He finished the season strong, scoring
in each of the Cougars' last three games to earn a spot on the
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference all-Tournament team.
Jiras, who is majoring in business administration at Caldwell,
joined Harriott on the Academic all-District first team this fall
and has also been a member of the CACC all-Academic team three
times. He is a resident's assistant in the Mother Joseph Residence
Hall and also works in the College's admissions department. Last
fall, Jiras turned in a strong season despite missing eight games as
a result of a broken clavicle. He started all 11 games in which he
played, tallying a goal and two assists. The Cougars' starting left
back for three years, Jiras earned a spot on the all-CACC second
team as a freshman and sophomore.
