CALDWELL,
N.J. - Despite out-shooting its opponent 32-4, the Caldwell College
men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with Wilmington College in a
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match Saturday afternoon at
Caldwell Field. The Cougars are now 7-4-1 on the season and 3-2-1 in
the conference, while the Wildcats, who are ranked ninth in the
latest New England Region poll, remain unbeaten in the CACC at
4-0-1, and are 9-3-1.
Wilmington's Sargbah Tarpeh put the Wildcats ahead with an
unassisted goal in the 22nd minute. The goal was scored on
Wilmington's only shot in regulation. Caldwell battled back to tie
the score at 1-1 in the 39th minute. Sophomore forward Chad
Bennett (Kingston, Jamaica/Campion) collected a loose ball in
the penalty area and blasted a shot into the back of the goal for
his seventh of the season. The Cougars continued to dominate
possession and put pressure on Wilmington goalkeeper Dan Mangat,
taking 25 shots during regulation. But Mangat was up to the task,
making several outstanding saves. In the 70th minute, senior forward
Uke Dauti (West Orange, NJ/West Orange) had an open shot from
18 yards that Mangat saved but the rebound went right to Bennett.
Bennett first-timed a shot that was headed for the goal, but Mangat
dove to his right to make the save and keep the Cougars at bay.
Tarpeh had the first scoring chance of the first overtime period,
when he broke in alone on sophomore goalkeeper Kareem Grant
(Elmont, NY/Wolmer's). Grant met Tarpeh at the top of the penalty
area and made the save. In the 102nd minute, freshman midfielder
Justin Miller (Monroe, NJ/Monroe) dribble in on the right side
and blasted a shot that beat Mangat but caromed off the near post.
In the second overtime period, senior Miguel Walker (St.
Catherine, Jamaica/Wolmer's) hit a shot off a corner kick that
deflected off a defender but right at Mangat in the 115th minute.
Tarpeh had the final scoring chance of the game when his header off
a Rob Galasso corner kick went just wide of the goal in the 120th
minute. Tarpeh had all four of Wilmington's shots in the game, while
Bennett and Dauti each had five for Caldwell.
Grant, who had helped the Cougars record three straight shutouts in
his first three starts of the season entering today's game, made one
save. Mangat finished with 10 saves, while the Wildcats were
credited with a team save when a defender cleared a shot by senior
midfielder Jorge Ibarcena (Lima, Peru) off the goal line. The
Wildcats were forced to play with 10 players for the final 28
minutes of the game after David Dease picked up his second yellow
card in the 82nd minute.
The Cougars host two-time defending CACC champion Dominican College
on Thursday, Oct. 5 in a rematch of last season's CACC Tournament
title game. Kick-off is set for 4:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
