CALDWELL,
N.J. - Two first-half goals allowed the Caldwell College men's
soccer team to defeat Bloomfield College, 2-0 in the quarterfinals
of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Monday
afternoon at Caldwell Field. The win puts the third-seeded Cougars
(10-5-4) into the semifinals against second-seeded Wilmington
College, while Bloomfield ends its season at 3-12-3. This is the
fifth straight year the Cougars have advanced to the conference
tournament semifinals.
Just two minutes, 50 seconds into the contest, junior Kevoi
Walters (Clarendon, Jamaica/Clarendon) and sophomore midfielder
Justin Miller (Monroe, NJ/Monroe) worked a give-and-go down
the left flank that sprung Walters in behind the Bloomfield defense.
Walters (pictured) scored from 12 yards out for a 1-0 Cougar lead.
Then in the 24th minute, junior forward Chad Bennett
(Kingston, Jamaica/Campion) intercepted a pass, dribbled to the
right of the goal and placed a shot over goalkeeper Julian Gaviria
and into the upper left corner of the net for his team-leading 10th
tally of the season. Caldwell held off the Deacons the rest of the
way for the victory.
Junior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) stopped
two Bloomfield shots to record his eighth shutout of the season.
Gaviria made three saves in goal for Bloomfield.
The Cougars face Wilmington in the CACC semifinals on Wednesday,
Oct. 31 at Tryon Field
in Rutherford, N.J. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m. following the
other semifinal between top-seeded Dominican College and fourth seed
Holy Family University.
