MEN'S SOCCER WINS CACC GAME WITH HOLY FAMILY, 2-1

N.J. - In his final regular-season home game, senior defender
Matt Broderick (West Keansburg, NJ/Raritan) scored the
game-winning goal in the 85th minute to break a 1-1 tie and give the
Caldwell College men's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Holy Family
University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference clash
Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. With the win, the Cougars move
to 6-1-1 in the conference (9-5-3 overall) with one game to play.
The Tigers fall to 11-7-1, 6-3 CACC.
Sophomore midfielder Justin Miller (Monroe, NJ/Monroe) gave
the Cougars a 1-0 lead when his shot from 12 yards out found the
back of the net in the 16th minute. Six minutes later, Holy Family's
Matt Kocher headed home a free kick from Ed Szambelak to tie the
game at 1-1. The two teams battled back and forth with neither squad
able to gain an advantage. Then with under six minutes to play,
junior defender Kagiso Rhenoster (Mafikeng, South Africa/Mmbatho)
won a loose ball on the left side and passed it to Broderick, who
dribbled a few feet before blasting a shot from 25 yards out into
the upper right corner of the goal. It was Broderick's third goal of
the season.
The Tigers were forced to play with 10 men after a player received
two yellow cards in the 72nd minute. Another Holy Family player was
sent off less than a minute after Broderick's goal, leaving the
Tigers with just nine players for the final 5:35.
Junior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) recorded
two saves for Caldwell, while his counterpart, Benjamin Roller,
stopped five shots for the Tigers. The Cougars held a 17-8 advantage
in shots and took seven corner kicks to two for Holy Family.
The match marked the final home game for Caldwell seniors Broderick,
defenders Andrew Fraser (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's) and
Jan Marco Jiras (Lima, Peru), and midfielder Nicholas
Harriott (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Campion).
The Cougars wrap up CACC play with a game at Felician College on
Oct. 25. The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. at Tryon Field
in Rutherford, N.J.
