CALDWELL,
N.J. - Caldwell College senior forward Chad Bennett (Kingston,
Jamaica/Campion) was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Men's Soccer Player of
the Year, as the conference released its annual awards today. Bennett is the
first Caldwell men's soccer player to receive the CACC's top honor.
Additionally, Cougars' head coach Jamie Nash was selected the CACC
Coach of the Year, while senior goalkeeper John Plaugic (Kearny,
NJ/Kearny) earned a spot on the all-CACC second team.
Bennett, who also was included on the all-CACC first team for the second
year in a row, leads the Cougars in goals with 13 and points with 30 this
season. He has four multi-goal games and three game-winning goals to help
the Cougars capture their first CACC regular-season title since 1993.
Bennett has been on fire down the stretch, scoring five goals in the team's
final four games. He was named the CACC and ECAC Player of the Week for the
week ending Oct. 19 after recording three goals and an assist in two CACC
wins. Also an all-Region second team selection as a junior, Bennett has been
Caldwell's top offensive catalyst for the past two seasons, as the Cougars
are 15-2-2 when he has scored a goal during that time. For his career,
Bennett has totaled 32 goals and 10 assists for 74 points in 63 games.
Plaugic, who received all-CACC honorable mention last season, has been the
Cougars' starting goalkeeper for the past three years. This season he has
made 65 saves and posted a 1.62 goals-against average while starting 17 of
the Cougars' 18 games this season. Plaugic also has recorded three shutouts,
giving him 15 for his career. One of the team's captains along with Bennett,
Plaugic has made 180 saves with a 1.18 goals-against average while posting a
30-18-5 record during his four years at Caldwell.
This is the first CACC Coach of the Year Award for Nash, who is in his ninth
season as the head coach at Caldwell. Nash guided the Cougars to the CACC
regular-season title with an 8-1-1 conference mark. It is the first CACC
regular-season crown for the Cougars since the 1993 squad shared the title.
The first-place finish puts Caldwell (11-6-1 overall) into the CACC
Tournament semifinals for the sixth straight season. A former standout
player for the Cougars who holds the program record for career assists, Nash
has an overall record of 81-77-16 heading into this week's CACC Tournament.
He has been either a coach or player at Caldwell for 13 seasons and a total
of 237 games.
Caldwell will play either Post University or Wilmington University on
Thursday, Nov. 6 in the CACC Tournament semifinals. The game, which will be
played at Plymouth Whitemarsh High School in Philadelphia, Pa., is set to
start at 12:00 p.m.
