ECAC HONORS BENNETT WITH MEN'S SOCCER WEEKLY AWARD
10-21-08
CALDWELL,
N.J. - Caldwell College senior forward Chad Bennett (Kingston,
Jamaica/Campion) was selected the ECAC Men's Soccer Co-Offensive Player of
the Week for the week ending Oct. 19, the organization released today.
Bennett, who was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's Player
of the Week yesterday, tallied seven points on three goals and one assist in
two conference victories last week.
Bennett helped Caldwell hand Bloomfield College its first CACC loss of the
season with two goals in a 3-2 victory on Thursday at Watessing Park. With
the Cougars trailing 1-0 midway through the second half, Bennett drew a foul
in the penalty area and converted the penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1. A
little over five minutes later, he finished a crossing pass from senior
defender Kagiso Rhenoster (Mafikeng, South Africa/Mmbatho) to put he
Cougars ahead to stay. In Saturday's 3-0 shutout of Philadelphia University,
Bennett one-timed a pass from senior forward Luis Sartorio (Asuncion,
Paraguay/St. Benedict's Prep) into the goal for what would prove to be the
game-winning goal. He also set up Sartorio's goal later in the game for his
third assist on the season.
Bennett leads the Cougars in goals with 11 and points with 25. He is the
first Caldwell men's soccer player to receive the ECAC's weekly honor since
2004, when former Cougar standout Bard Skjelstad was chosen the ECAC
Player of the Week.
The ECAC's membership includes 320 colleges and universities from Maine to
Georgia and westerly to Illinois. Caldwell student-athletes have received
weekly and year-end honors from the ECAC since joining the organization in
2004, and the men's and women's soccer teams and men's and women's
basketball teams have competed in ECAC championship tournaments.
Bennett and the Cougars return to action on Thursday, Oct. 23, when they
play a CACC match at Post University. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. in
Waterbury, Conn.
