N.J. - The Caldwell College men's soccer team lost a Central
Atlantic Collegiate Conference game to Bloomfield College, 4-1
Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars, who hadn't lost
to Bloomfield since 1996, drop to 3-9-1 overall and 3-5 in league
play. The Deacons improve to 6-8-1, 5-3-1 CACC.
Bloomfield broke a scoreless tie in the 23rd minute, when Evans
Tageo finished a crossing pass from Terry Gibbs for a 1-0 lead.
Tageo struck again less than three minutes into the second half with
a shot from the left side that beat sophomore goalkeeper John Londono
(West New York, NJ/Memorial) to his left. Andres Decastro made it
3-0 when he ran onto a long cross from Cristian Raigoza at the far
post and poked the ball into the goal in the 60th minute. The
Cougars got on the scoreboard in the 74th minute on a goal by
Facundo Zalazar (Buenos Aires City, Argentina/San Agustin). A
free kick from junior defender Rob Arena (Sparta, NJ/Sparta)
was headed on by junior defender Olof Engh (Karlstad, Sweden)
to senior defender Kyle Plaugic (Kearny, NJ/Kearny), who
one-timed a pass to Zalazar in front of the goal. Zalazar knocked it
home for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Shortly after an open shot by sophomore forward William Yeates
(Southampton, England/Thornden) sailed wide of the goal, the Deacons
countered and found Gibbs in behind the Cougar defense. Gibbs
dribbled around Londono and restored Bloomfield's three-goal lead
with less than 10 minutes to play.
Londono finished with five saves in goal for Caldwell, while Steven
Alonso registered two saves for the Deacons, who out-shot the
Cougars 18-7.
Caldwell hosts Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday, Oct. 24 in another
CACC contest. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
