MEN'S TENNIS DEFEATS STATEN ISLAND FOR PROGRAM-BEST EIGHTH WIN
5-2-06
CALDWELL, N.J. - With an 8-1 victory over the College of Staten Island
on Tuesday, the Caldwell College men's tennis team became the winningest team
in the program's 12-year history. The previous mark was held by the 2003 squad
that finished 7-4. Caldwell completes the 2006 season with a record of 8-7, a
significant improvement on last season's 2-9 mark.
After sweeping all three doubles matches, the Cougars won five of six singles
matches to claim the victory. Juniors Chris Costa (Montville, NJ/DePaul
Catholic) and Chris Laciura (Teaneck, NJ/Paramus Catholic), pictured, sophomores
Jan Marco Jiras (Lima, Peru) and Amir Zandieh (Tehran,
Iran/Montville), and freshman Mike Ober (Lavallette, NJ/Point Beach)
were victorious in straight sets at first, second, fourth, fifth and sixth
singles, respectively. Jiras finished the year with a team-best 11-3 singles
record, while Costa went 9-6 at No. 1 singles.
"I'm proud of the way we competed all season, and getting the record certainly
means a lot to our team," Caldwell coach Jen Carleton said. "Each
player improved as the season went on. With everyone coming back, we're aiming
to break the record again next season."
