CALDWELL LOSES CLOSE DUAL AT NJIT

NEWARK, N.J. - The Caldwell College men's tennis team was defeated by
N.J.I.T., 4-3 in a dual at the Fleischer Athletic Center Tuesday afternoon.
The result gives Caldwell a 2-4 record on the season, while the Highlanders
improve to 7-9.
The teams used NCAA Division I scoring in which the team that wins at least
two of the three doubles matches is awarded one point. The Cougars earned the
doubles point with victories at first and second singles. Juniors Chris
Costa (Montville, NJ/DePaul Catholic) and Chris Laciura (Teaneck,
NJ/Paramus Catholic) edged Steve Arlt and Roger Wang at No. 1 doubles, 9-7. At
No. 2 doubles, sophomores Jan Marco Jiras (Lima, Peru) and Amir
Zandieh (Tehran, Iran/Montville) downed Mike Lawandy and Damien Wentzel,
8-6.
In singles, Costa outlasted Arlt, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles for his
third straight victory of the season. Jiras also won in three sets, defeating
Wentzel 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 to improve to 5-1 this year. The Highlanders earned
straight-set victories at send, third, fourth and fifth singles to win the
dual.
The Cougars return to the courts with a home dual against Mercy College,
starting at 4:00 p.m. at the Caldwell Tennis Courts.
