COUGARS MATCH SCHOOL RECORD WITH WIN OVER POST
4-26-06
CALDWELL, N.J. - With a 9-0 shutout of Post University Wednesday
afternoon, the Caldwell College men's tennis team tied the program's record
for most wins in a season, improving to 7-5. The Cougars, who have won five
straight, matched the win total turned in by the 2003 squad, which finished
7-4.
After sweeping all three doubles matches, Caldwell cruised in singles play,
winning all but nine games in the six matches. Juniors Chris Costa (Montville, NJ/DePaul Catholic) and Chris Laciura
(Teaneck, NJ/Paramus Catholic) and sophomore Jan Marco Jiras (Lima,
Peru) blanked their opponents at first, second and fourth singles,
respectively. For Jiras (pictured), the win was his team-leading ninth of the season,
while Costa improved to 8-4. The Cougars also received wins from sophomore
Amir Zandieh (Tehran, Iran/Montville) at third singles, junior Marcus
Collins (Brooklyn, NY/Cobble Hill) at fifth singles, and freshman Mike
Ober (Lavallette, NJ/Point Beach) at sixth singles.
The Cougars will attempt to become the winningest men's tennis team in the
program's 12-year history when they host the University of Sciences on
Saturday, Apr. 29. The dual starts at 12:00 p.m. at the Caldwell Tennis
Courts.
