MEN'S TENNIS WINS SEASON-OPENER AGAINST ST. THOMAS AQUINAS

CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College men's tennis team opened the 2007 season with a
7-2 victory over St. Thomas Aquinas College Tuesday afternoon at the
Caldwell College Tennis Courts. The Cougars, who won a school-record eight
duals last season, won five of six singles matches and two out of three in
doubles.
Seniors Chris Costa (Montville, NJ/DePaul Catholic), right, and
Chris Laciura (Teaneck, NJ/Paramus Catholic) and junior Jan Marco
Jiras (Lima, Peru) earned straight-set victories at first, second and
fifth singles, respectively. Freshman Mike Ober (Lavallette, NJ/Point
Beach) won his match at sixth singles 8-6, while junior Amir Zandieh
(Tehran, Iran/Montville) edged the Spartans' Jon Pomarico in a third-set
tie-breaker. Costa and Laciura won their match at No. 1 doubles, with Jiras
and Zandieh winning at No. 2 doubles.
The Cougars play another home dual on Tuesday, Apr. 3 against Dowling
College. The first matches begin at 3:30 p.m. at the Caldwell College Tennis
Courts.
