SAUNDERS, FALKOWSKI LEAD COUGARS TO 2-0 VICTORY OVER LE MOYNE AT REGIONAL TOURNEY

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) pitched a two-hit shutout, and sophomore Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) homered and doubled as the Caldwell College softball team defeated host Le Moyne College, 2-0 at the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament Thursday afternoon. The victory means the second-seeded Cougars (40-9) will play top-seeded C.W. Post (38-11) on Friday, May 13 at 2:30 p.m. The Dolphins (38-9), which beat New Haven earlier today, will play No. 5 Bryant at 9:30 a.m.

The Cougars opened the scoring in the bottom of the third, when freshman Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NJ/Waterloo) ran out an infield single, then advanced to third on a single by junior Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville). Junior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, plating Speno for the first run of the game. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the sixth, when Falkowski hit a one-out solo home run over the centerfield fence.

That is all the offense Saunders would need, as she would take a no-hitter into the fifth inning. A single to lead off the fifth and a single in the seventh, plus a pair of walks, was all Le Moyne could get off of Saunders, who struck out 11 batters and improved to 17-5 on the season. The Dolphins' Martha Senko  (11-3) gave up six hits and two runs while striking out eight in a losing effort.

The Cougars, ranked 11th in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, will take on 18th-ranked C.W. Post on Friday at 2:30 p.m. The two teams split a doubleheader at Caldwell Field on Apr. 19.
