SYRACUSE, N.Y. - C.W. Post's Kristen Berdinka hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to lead the Pioneers to a 2-1 victory over No. 2 Caldwell College in the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Softball Tournament on Friday afternoon at the Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The loss dropped the Cougars to 40-10 and moved them into tomorrow's elimination game at 12:00 p.m. against Le Moyne College. The Pioneers (39-11) are one win away from the region title and will face the winner of tomorrow's first game.

The Cougars got on the scoreboard first when junior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) hit a home run to centerfield in the top of the fourth for her sixth round-tripper of the season. Sophomore pitcher Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) cruised through the first four innings for Caldwell, allowing just one hit while striking out five. Then in the bottom of the fifth, C.W. Post's Kelsey Cooley led off with a double to left center. After a groundout, Berdinka hit an 0-1 pitch over the left field fence to put the Pioneers up 2-1. The Cougars managed to put a pair of runners on base in the sixth and another in the seventh, but were unable to tie the game, as C.W. Post handed Caldwell its first loss in the Northeast Region Tournament.

Dahl (15-5) allowed just three hits and two walks while striking out eight in defeat. Junior Kim Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) went 2-for-3 at the plate for Caldwell. The Pioneers' Danielle Stallone (9-3) hurled 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief while giving up only two hits to earn the victory.

The Cougars are no strangers to being on the verge of elimination. Last weekend in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament, Caldwell lost to Georgian Court University on the tournament's second day, then defeated Goldey-Beacom College in 12 innings, and took two straight from Georgian Court to capture its second straight CACC Tournament crown.
