SYRACUSE,
N.Y. - The Caldwell College softball team lost to Le Moyne College, 3-1 and
was eliminated from the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament
Saturday afternoon at Le Moyne's Thomas J. Niland Athletic Complex. The
second seeded Cougars, who beat Le Moyne on Thursday, finish the season
40-11, their second straight year with 40 or more victories. The Dolphins
(41-9) advances to face top-seeded C.W Post later this afternoon for the
tournament championship.
Le Moyne took advantage of a pair of two-out errors to score a pair of runs
in the top of the third. Jennifer Winters reached on an error, followed by a
single by Kristen DesLauriers. A throwing error allowed Winters to score and
DesLauriers to advance to second. Sarah Reed singled to plate DesLauriers
for a 2-0 Dolphins lead. The Cougars got on the scoreboard in the bottom of
the fourth, when junior Gina D'Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington
Twp) (pictured) singled home freshman Meghan Johnston (Kirkland,
WA/Lake Washington), who pinch-ran for junior Katie Jackson
(Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville). But Le Moyne got the run back in the top of the
fifth on a home run by Lindsay Spaziani.
Junior pitcher Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop
Spaulding), who tossed a two-hitter in the first game with the Dolphins,
gave up three hits and walked two while striking out eight in 7.0 innings.
Reed improved to 15-4 after allowing three hits and three runs with five
strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
The Cougars, ranked 11th in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, have
won a combined 85 games over the past two seasons and have captured the
Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference regular-season and tournament crowns
two years in a row.
