FOUR COUGARS ACHIEVE NFCA SCHOLAR-ATHLETE STATUS

10-13-04
CALDWELL, N.J. - Four members of the Caldwell College softball team earned Scholar-Athlete honors by the National Fastpitch Coaches' Association for the 2003-04 academic year, the organization announced. Student-athletes must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher to be named a Scholar-Athlete. Also, Caldwell's softball team ranked 37th among NCAA Division II softball programs in team GPA with an average of 3.12.

Caldwell's four Scholar-Athletes are Candice Collins (Clementon, NJ/Victory Christian), Gina D'Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Township), Corinne Reiser (West Milford, NJ/West Milford) and Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spalding). Collins and Reiser were seniors last year, while D'Amico and Saunders are both juniors on this year's squad.

This past spring, the Cougars, coached by Dean Johnson, captured the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and Northeast Regional tournaments to advance to the NCAA Division II College Softball World Series en route to a 45-7 record. Reiser compiled a record of 27-4 as a starting pitcher and was named the CACC Pitcher of the Year, a first-team All-Region selection and a second team All-American, as well as earning MVP honors of both the conference and regional tournaments. Collins joined Reiser on the All-CACC first team and also was a second team All-Region choice.
