CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Adelphi University Sunday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars, who lost the first game 2-0 before winning the second game 5-1, are now 23-6 on the season, while the Panthers are 19-11.

In the first game, Adelphi scored both of its runs in the first inning. Julie Schaper led off with a single, then Theresa Kotulak and Amy Delmore followed with RBI doubles off Caldwell starter Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding). Saunders allowed just three hits the rest of the way, but the Cougars were unable to push any runs across the plate against Panthers' pitcher Carla Buonviaggio despite advancing a runner to third base twice. Buonviaggio went the distance for the shutout, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out six. Saunders (8-4) struck out 11 batters while walking two in a losing effort. The loss ended Caldwell's winning streak at 13 games.

In the second game, the Panthers scored again in the first inning when Kotulak singled home Alana daSilva. But this time the Cougars responded with four runs in the bottom of the first. Freshman Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) led off with a triple, then scored on a single by junior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville).  Sophomore Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) and freshman Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) had two-out RBI singles, followed by a double from junior Gina D'Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp) (pictured) that plated Bodrog and gave the Cougars a 4-1 lead. D'Amico also homered in the sixth inning, her first of the season, to complete the scoring.

Freshman Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) remained unbeaten (6-0) after allowing six hits and one run in four innings of work to earn the decision. Sophomore Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) pitched three shutout innings to record her second save of the season.

The Cougars, who are ranked first in the latest Northeast Region rankings, host No. 2 C.W. Post on Tuesday, Apr. 19, for a non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
