CALDWELL,
N.J. - Pitchers Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop
Spaulding) and Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson)
combined to allow just six hits and one run as the Caldwell College
softball team swept American International College, 5-0 and 7-1 in a
non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The
Cougars, who are ranked 17th in the latest NFCA Division II national
poll, improved to 14-5 on the season, while the Yellow Jackets fell to
3-13.
In the first game, the Cougars would get all the offense they would
need in the first inning, when juniors Amy Coker (Pennsville,
NJ/Pennsville) and Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville)
doubled back-to-back. In the second inning, three straight singles by
sophomores Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and
Desiree Wilson (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and
freshman Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) made the score
2-0. Wilson later scored on a bases-loaded walk to put the Cougars up
3-0. Wilson scored another run in the fourth on Jackson's groundout,
and a single by freshman Stephanie Brodo (Belleville, NJ/St.
Mary's) plated freshman Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads)
in the sixth for the game's final run.
Saunders (6-3), pictured, allowed just three hits and two walks while
striking out 13, including eight of the last 10 batters. Morgan Larson
took the loss for the Yellow Jackets after giving up four runs and
seven hits in five innings of work.
In the second game the Yellow Jackets struck first with a run in the
third inning. American International pitcher Megan Nickerson held the
Cougars to four hits through the first four innings to maintain the
1-0 lead. Then in the bottom of the fifth, the Cougars loaded the
bases with three singles before Jackson drew a walk to score
Caldwell's first run of the game. A single by sophomore Jackie
Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) scored two more runs to give
the Cougars a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth with Larson back on the mound for the
Yellow Jackets, Caldwell put the game away with four runs. Freshman
Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) doubled and later scored on
a passed ball. Then with two outs on two runners on base, sophomore
Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) doubled home Speno,
followed by another two-RBI single by Velardi that plated Coker and
senior Stacie Zafiris (Palisades Park, NJ/Palisades Park), who
pinch-ran for Dahl.
The freshman de la Campa (3-0) followed Saunders' masterpiece with a
gem of her own, giving up three hits and one unearned run while
striking out eight in seven innings. For the season, opponents are
batting just .114 against de la Campa, who has allowed 10 hits in 24
1/3 innings.
The Cougars return to the field on Sunday, Apr. 10 for a
non-conference doubleheader at Philadelphia University.
