CALDWELL PLACES SEVEN ON ALL-CACC SOFTBALL TEAMS; JOHNSON SELECTED COACH OF THE YEAR

5-4-05
CALDWELL, N.J. - Caldwell College softball coach Dean Johnson was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Softball Coach of the Year, the conference announced. Johnson has guided the Cougars to an overall record of 35-8 and the program's second straight CACC regular-season title with an 18-2 mark in conference play. It is his fourth CACC Coach of the Year award in his 11 seasons at Caldwell. Additionally, seven Cougars were selected to the all-CACC first and second teams.

Four players received all-CACC first-team honors: juniors Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville), Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) and Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) and sophomore Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic).

Coker, a two-time NFCA all-Northeast Region second-baseman, leads the Cougars in batting (.399), hits (57), runs scored (36) and doubles (13). She was named the CACC Player of the Week on Apr. 5.

Jackson, who made the all-CACC first team in 2003 and 2004, is hitting .387 with four homers and 30 runs batted in. Last month, the right-fielder became the second Cougar ever to be chosen the NFCA/Louisville Slugger Division II National Player of the Week on Apr. 26.

This is the first all-CACC honor for Saunders, who is 13-5 with an earned run average of 0.94. In 118 2/3 innings of work, Saunders has struck out 142 batters while walking 44.

Dahl is a repeat selection to the first team as the designated player. Dahl leads Caldwell with five home runs and 40 RBI with a slugging percentage of .611 while batting .345. She also has been the Cougars' top pitcher with a record of 14-3 and an  ERA of 0.83. Dahl twice received the CACC Pitcher of the Week award this season.

Selected to the all-CACC second team were sophomores Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) and Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) and freshman Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads).

Falkowski is hitting .282 with 17 RBI on the season. The third-baseman has committed just five errors in 70 chances at the hot corner for a fielding percentage of .929. Velardi, an all-CACC selection as a freshman, ranks second on the team with 35 RBI while hitting .331. Flasphaler is batting .323 with a team-high four triples while starting 38 games in centerfield.

The Cougars, ranked 11th in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, host the CACC Tournament May 5-7 at Caldwell Field.
