CALDWELL,
N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team, ranked first in the
Northeast Region, split a non-conference doubleheader with No. 2 C.W.
Post Tuesday afternoon at Caldwell Field, winning the first game 1-0
before falling 2-0 in the second. The Cougars are now 24-7 on the
season, while the Pioneers are 25-9. Both teams are ranked nationally
as well in the latest NFCA Division II poll, with Caldwell at No. 12
and C.W. Post at No. 21.
The pitchers took center stage in both games, as the teams combined
for just three runs in the doubleheader. In the first game, sophomore
Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) and the Pioneers'
Amanda Moore turned in dominating performances. The Cougars scored the
only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, when the
Cougars loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a single by sophomore
Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville). Moore then hit
freshman Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) (pictured) with
a pitch, allowing junior Katie Jackson (Pennsville,
NJ/Pennsville) to score.
Dahl recorded her second shutout of the season, allowing just two hits
while striking out five and walking none to improve to 10-2 on the
season. She lowered her CACC-leading earned-run average to 0.81. Moore
gave up four hits and three walks while striking out six in the loss.
In the second game, the Cougars were unable to score a run off of
Pioneers' pitcher Samantha Yodowitz, who struck out seven while
allowing five hits and two walks in seven innings to earn the shutout.
C.W. Post scored an unearned run in the fourth, then Jill Fisher
homered in the fifth for the 2-0 win. Caldwell junior Jessica
Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) fanned nine
batters while walking just one and allowing seven hits in seven
innings to fall to 8-5.
The Cougars return to action on Thursday, Apr. 21, when they host CACC-foe
Felician College in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for
3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
