CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. - Pitchers Anna Dahl (Lindenwold,
NJ/Camden Catholic) and Kristen de la Campa (Whitman,
MA/Whitman Hanson) limited Dowling College to a total of four hits and
no runs as the Caldwell College softball team won a pair of
non-conference games, 1-0 and 7-0 in a doubleheader Saturday
afternoon. The Cougars, who have won 13 consecutive games, are now
22-5 overall, while Dowling falls to 18-13 on the season.
The first game was a pitcher's dual, with both teams struggling to
score. Dahl allowed just one hit, a single in the fifth, while the
Cougars could muster only three hits through six innings. Then in the
top of the seventh, Caldwell loaded the bases with back-to-back
singles by juniors Kim Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook)
and Gina D'Amico (Turnersville,
NJ/Washington Twp), followed by freshman Carrie Flasphaler
(Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) reaching on an error. Freshman Alyssa
Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) then knocked home the game's only
run when an error allowed Birmingham to score. Dahl improved to 9-2 on
the season with her first complete-game shutout of the year.
Caldwell turned up the offense in the second game, scoring seven runs
on 12 hits. Junior Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville)
singled home Speno in the third to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Then
in the fourth, the Cougars scored six runs on six hits to put the game
out of reach. D'Amico and Speno each had two-run doubles, while Coker
and Dahl had RBI singles in the inning. De la Campa (pictured) didn't need much
offense, however, as the freshman improved to 5-0 after allowing just
three hits and two walks while striking out six to earn her first
career shutout. For the season, opponents are batting just .136
against de la Campa.
Next up for the Cougars is another non-conference doubleheader with
Adelphi University at Caldwell Field. The first pitch is set for 12:00
p.m.
