CALDWELL,
N.J. - In a match-up between the top two teams in the Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference, the Caldwell College softball team defeated
Felician College 5-3 in the first game, then lost 4-2 to the Golden
Falcons in the second game of a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at
Caldwell Field. The Cougars are now 25-8 overall and 12-2 in the CACC
to remain in first place ahead of Felician, which is 12-4 in the
conference and 18-12 overall.
In the first game, the Cougars opened the scoring in the bottom of the
fourth, when freshman Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads)
singled with the bases loaded to score freshman Meghan Johnston
(Kirkland, WA/Lake Washington). Then in the fifth inning, junior
Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) singles and later scored on
a sacrifice fly by sophomore Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden
Catholic) to make the score 2-0. But Felician tied the game in the top
of the sixth, when Brittany Steiner hit a two-run home run. Caldwell
went ahead for good with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Coker
doubled home junior Kim Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook),
then later scored along with freshman Alyssa Speno (Waterloo,
NY/Waterloo) on a wild pitch and an error.
Junior pitcher Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop
Spaulding) improved to 9-5 on the season after allowing three runs and
seven hits while striking out 11 in seven innings of work. Jackie
Scarpari, who also went the distance, took the loss for Felician.
The second game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning.
Felician's Nicole Maltais doubled home a pair of runs, then later
scored on Steiner's single. Steiner came home on an error to make the
score 4-0 in favor of the Golden Falcons. The Cougars rallied in the
bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Coker and junior Katie
Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) singled, then junior Gina
D'Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp) drew a walk to load the
bases. Sophomore Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville)
singled, scoring Coker and sophomore Desiree Wilson (Gloucester
City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic), who pinch-ran for Jackson, to pull the
Cougars to within two runs. But the next batter popped up to third,
ending the threat and the game.
Jackson (pictured) went 4-for-5 on the day for Caldwell, including a
perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the second game. Jennifer Barnes
pitcher four shutout innings while allowing three hits to earn the
victory. Freshman Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman
Hanson) hurled two scoreless innings in relief of starter Dahl (10-3),
who took the loss.
The Cougars take the field on Friday, Apr. 22, when they host Queens
College in a non-conference doubleheader that was originally scheduled
for Apr. 2. Game time is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
