CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team blanked Goldey-Beacom College, 8-0 and 3-0, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars are now 14-2 in the conference and 29-8 overall, while the Lightning is 17-15 overall and 7-7 CACC.

In the first game, Caldwell jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. A sacrifice fly to left field by sophomore Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) (pictured) scored freshman Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo), then a double steal by junior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) and sophomore Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) allowed Jackson to come home for a 2-0 lead. The Cougars pushed five runs across in the bottom of the third. Dahl singled home Jackson, then scored when junior Kim Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) drew a bases-loaded walk. Speno followed with a bases-clearing double that put the Cougars up 7-0. Dahl knocked in her third run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, when she doubled home Velardi. That run, coupled with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth, ended the game via the eight-run rule.

Dahl (11-3) pitched all five innings for Caldwell, giving up just two hits and two walks while striking out two to earn her third shutout.

The Cougars again scored first in the second game with two runs in the third inning. Freshman Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led off with a triple, then later scored on Jackson's single. With two runners on and two out, Dahl doubled, scoring Jackson to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Caldwell added one run in the sixth, when junior Sara Neely (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) plated junior Gina D'Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp) with an RBI single.

This time it was junior Jessica Saunders' (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) turn to shut down the Lightning en route to earning her 11th win of the season. Saunders (11-5) struck out 10 batters while walking only two for her fifth shutout this season.

Next up for the Cougars is another CACC doubleheader with Bloomfield College on Tuesday, Apr. 26. The first game begins at 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
