LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball
team lost its first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game of the
season, a 4-3 defeat in nine innings, then earned a split with a 5-1
win in a doubleheader at Georgian Court
University Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars are now 9-4 overall and 5-1
in the conference, while the Lions are 9-7, 2-3 CACC.
The Cougars started the first game by jumping out to a 2-0 lead, with
junior Amy Coker scoring both runs. Coker, who was recently named the
CACC Player of the Week, singled and later scored on a passed ball in
the first inning, then scored on a double by sophomore Anna Dahl
(Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) in the fourth. Georgian Court tied
the score in the bottom of the fourth on Julie Sito's two-run home
run.
The game remained tied into extra innings until junior Kim
Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) (pictured) doubled home pinch-runner Meghan
Johnston (Kirkland, WA/Lake Washington), who was placed on second
to start the inning. The Lions retaliated in the bottom-half of the
ninth, as Autumn Florez scored on Nicole Fortino's single to tie the
score. Then with the bases loaded and two out, a bloop single by
Jennifer McGovern plated Fortino for the game-winning run.
Caldwell junior Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop
Spaulding) went the distance on the mound, allowing six hits and 10
walks while striking out nine. Sherry Keach also pitched a complete
game to earn the victory and improve to 7-2 on the season.
The Cougars never trailed in the second game, scoring runs in the
second, fourth, fifth and seventh innings. Junior Jackie Velardi
(Belleville, NJ/Belleville) scored the game's first run in the second
when freshman Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) drew a walk
with the bases loaded. Freshman Nicole Bodrog
(Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) singled and later scored on a passed
ball in the fourth, then Velardi doubled home a pair of runs in the
fifth. Coker closed out the scoring with her first home run of the
season in the seventh.
Dahl hurled another gem, allowing just two hits, a walk and an
unearned run while striking out seven in seven innings. Jade Reid took
the loss for Georgian Court.
The Cougars return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 6, with a
non-conference doubleheader against Pace University at Caldwell Field.
The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
