CALDWELL, N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team won a pair
of Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference games against Holy Family
University, 5-1 and 4-1, in a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at
Caldwell Field. The Cougars are now 7-1 in the conference and 12-5
overall, while the Lady Tigers are 13-8 overall, 2-2 CACC.
In the first game, the Cougars scored all five of their runs in the
first two innings, with freshman Alyssa Speno (Waterloo,
NY/Waterloo) scoring twice. Speno tripled to lead off the game and
scored on a single by junior Amy Coker (Pennsville,
NJ/Pennsville) (pictured). Sophomore Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden
Catholic) doubled home Coker to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. In the
second inning, Speno and Coker singled back-to-back, with Speno
eventually scoring on an error. Then later in the third, a double to
left center by junior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville)
knocked home both Coker and sophomore Jackie Velardi
(Belleville, NJ/Belleville) for a 5-0 advantage.
That's all the offense junior pitcher Jessica Saunders (Glen
Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) would need to improve to 5-3 on the
season. Saunders yielded five hits, one run and two walks while
striking out four in seven innings. Holy Family scored its only run in
the sixth and had opportunities to score more that inning, having
loaded the bases with one out. But Saunders forced a pop-up and
groundout to end the inning and the threat.
The Lady Tigers struck first in the second game, when Lauren Armstrong
doubled home Tara Debes in the first inning for a 1-0 lead. But the
Cougars used a three-run second inning to take control of the game.
After freshman Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and junior
Kim Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) both singled,
sophomore Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) doubled
home both runs. Falkowski later scored on a passed ball to make the
score 3-1. The Cougars added an insurance run in the fifth inning,
when Coker scored on a wild pitch.
Dahl (5-2) went the distance on the mound, allowing seven hits and the
one unearned run while fanning three batters and walking none.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, Apr. 9, when they host
American International in a non-conference doubleheader at Caldwell
Field. The first pitch is set for 2:00 p.m.
