CALDWELL,
N.J. - Pitchers Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) and
Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) each hurled shutouts as
the Caldwell College softball team blanked Molloy College, 7-0 and 8-0 in a
non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The
Cougars, who have clinched the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
regular-season title, improved to 33-8 overall, while the Lions dropped to
14-28.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the first game in the second inning, when
Dahl led off with a triple and scored on a single by junior Gina D'Amico
(Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp). Caldwell put the game out of reach with
six runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Cougars hit five straight
singles to open the inning, with sophomore Jackie Velardi
(Belleville, NJ/Belleville) (pictured) scoring two runs and Dahl plating
another. D'Amico later singled home Velardi, and Dahl came home on a
sacrifice fly by sophomore Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads).
Freshman Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo), who led off the inning
with a single, knocked home D'Amico with another single to close out the
scoring.
Dahl went the distance, allowing just five hits in 7.0 innings while
striking out 10. She also went 2-for-2 at the plate, while Velardi led the
way offensively with three hits and two runs batted in.
The Cougars wasted little time in the second game, scoring six runs in the
bottom of the first. Junior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville)
tripled home a pair of runs in the inning, while Dahl's double scored
Velardi from first base. Velardi and freshman Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads,
NY/Horseheads) each had RBI singles, and Flasphaler later scored on a passed
ball. The Cougars added runs in the second and third innings on RBI singles
from Velardi and freshman Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) to go
up 8-0. De la Campa kept the Lions off the scoreboard the rest of the way as
the game was called in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.
De la Campa held the Lions to just three hits and one walk while striking
out three in 5.0 innings for her second shutout of the season. Junior Amy
Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) went 3-for-3 in the second game to
finish the day with five hits, while Velardi also had five hits after going
2-for-2 in game two.
The Cougars wrap up the regular season with a CACC doubleheader at
Wilmington College on Tuesday, May 3.
