ANOTHER NINE-INNING DEFEAT, SPLIT FOR COUGAR SOFTBALL

4-6-05
Pace 5, CC 3 (9 inn.)
CC 10, Pace 2
CALDWELL, N.J. - For the second day in a row, the Caldwell College softball team lost a one-run game in the ninth inning, then earned a split with a victory in the second game in s non-conference doubleheader with Pace University Wednesday afternoon at Caldwell Field. The Cougars, who followed up the 5-4 loss with a 10-2 win, are now 10-5 on the season, while the Setters are 4-12.

In the first game, the Cougars trailed 3-0 after Pace scored runs in the first, third and fourth innings. Caldwell broke through in the bottom of the fifth, when freshman Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) (pictured) led off with a triple and then scored on a single by junior Kim Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook). Later in the inning, sophomore Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) singled home freshman Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) to make the score 3-2.

Pace added another run in the top of the sixth and took a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. After Speno and junior Amy Coker (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) singled to start the seventh, a pop-up and strikeout had the Cougars down to their last out. But sophomore Jackie Velardi (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) knocked home both Speno and Coker with a single to keep the Cougars alive and send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the ninth, Pace's Michelle Brigham was placed on second base and advanced to third on a single by Kelly Kinyon. Brigham then scored the go-ahead run when Jacquelyn Burd doubled. Despite having Speno placed on second base to start the bottom of the ninth, the Cougars were unable to score in their half of the inning.

Dahl (4-2) pitched all nine innings and took the loss while allowing nine hits, one earned run and seven walks with six strikeouts. Kinyon earned the victory for Pace after allowing 10 hits and two walks with four strikeouts in nine innings.

In the second game, Caldwell took a 1-0 lead in the third, then scored nine runs on eight hits in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) hit a three-run homer, while Velardi and Bodrog each had two-run doubles in the inning. Bodrog went 3-for-3 in the game and 6-for-7 on the day to lead the Cougars.

Freshman Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) earned her second win of the season after allowing two hits, two runs and four walks while fanning five batters in five innings of work.
