JACKSON POWERS COUGARS TO SWEEP OF QUEENS

4-22-05
CC 2, QC 1 (8 inn.)
CC 10, QC 3
CALDWELL, N.J. - Junior right-fielder Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) belted a pair of home runs to lead the Caldwell College Softball team to a sweep of Queens College in a non-conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at Caldwell Field. With the wins, the Cougars improved to 27-8 overall, while the Knights fell to 15-20.

The first game was a pitcher's dual between junior Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) and Queen's Victoria Forsythe. The Knights got on the board first when Katie Karpinski and Crystal Wilson hit back-to-back doubles in the top of the fourth inning. Forsythe held the Cougars without a hit until a single by junior Kim Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook) (pictured) in the sixth inning broke up the no-hitter. Then in the bottom of the seventh with the Cougars still trailing 1-0, Jackson hit her third home run of the season to tie the game and force extra innings. After the Knights failed to score in the top of the eighth, junior Gina D'Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp) led off the bottom of the inning with a triple. Birmingham followed with a single that scored D'Amico and gave the Cougars a 2-1 victory.

Saunders went the distance for Caldwell, allowing one run, five hits and three walks while striking out nine to improve to 10-5. Forsythe took the loss after giving up two runs and four hits while fanning four.

The Cougars had the bats working early in the second game, taking a 6-0 lead in the first inning. D'Amico and freshman Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads, NJ/Horseheads) had RBI triples, while Jackson, Birmingham and sophomore Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NJ/Horseheads) each singled home runs in the inning. Then in the fourth inning, Jackson hit a two-run homer, scoring freshman Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) and giving Caldwell an 8-0 lead. The Knights avoided the eight-run rule with three unearned runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 8-3. The Cougars closed out the scoring in the bottom of the sixth, when freshman Stephanie Brodo (Belleville, NJ/St. Mary's) doubled home Brodrog, then scored on D'Amico's RBI double.

Freshman Kristen de la Campa (Whitman, MA/Whitman Hanson) earned the victory and improved to 7-0 on the season after allowing four hits and one walk while striking out three in 4 1/3 innings. Sophomore Anna Dahl turned in 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn her third save of the year.

The Cougars return to action on Sunday, Apr. 24, when they host Goldey-Beacom College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
