CALDWELL COLLEGE TO HOST CACC SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

CALDWELL, N.J. – The 2006 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference
softball tournament will be held on the campus of Caldwell College beginning
Thursday, May 4, with the champion crowned on Saturday, May 6. The Caldwell
College Cougars are the two-time defending CACC Tournament champions and are
the top seed in this year’s tourney after finishing with a conference record
of 19-3 (33-15 overall). The winner of this week’s tournament earns an
automatic bid to the NCAA Northeast Region Tournament. The games played on
Friday and Saturday will be broadcast on the internet via the
CACC website.
Caldwell closed out the regular season with six CACC victories, clinching
the top seed with a sweep of Georgian Court University on Saturday, Apr. 29
at Caldwell Field. This is the third straight regular-season conference
title for the Cougars, who are also ranked 13th in the latest NFCA Division
II Top 25 Poll. Over the last three seasons, Caldwell has posted a 56-6
conference record during the regular season.
Dominican College (35-15, 15-7 CACC) earned the No. 2 seed by virtue of a
tie-breaker with third seed Georgian Court (25-11, 15-7 CACC), last season’s
runner-up. Goldey-Beacom College (17-18, 14-8 CACC) are seeded fourth, with
Bloomfield College (15-28, 12-10) and Felician College (22-21, 12-10) seeded
fifth and sixth, respectively. Caldwell will take on the winner of the
Goldey-Beacom/Bloomfield game at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday.
Last season, the Cougars needed three wins on the tournament’s final day to
repeat as champions. Tournament MVP Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie,
MD/Archbishop Spaulding) pitched a total of 16 2/3 innings to help Caldwell
earn the title with a 12-inning win over Goldey-Beacom College and
back-to-back victories over Georgian Court. The Cougars finished the 2005
season with a 40-11 record and a final national ranking of 22nd after
advancing to the Northeast Region Tournament for the second year in a row.
