BLOOMFIELD,
N.J. - The Caldwell College softball team scored three runs in the top of
the seventh to earn a comeback win in the second game of a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference doubleheader at Bloomfield College on Monday
afternoon. The Cougars, which dropped the first game 6-3 before winning game
two 4-2, are now 17-11 overall and 8-2 in the CACC, while the Deacons are
10-19, 7-5 CACC.
The Cougars took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning of game one.
Senior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) drove home both runs
when her single plated senior Kristi Godfrey (West Babylon, NJ/West
Babylon) and sophomore Nicole Bodrog (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape). The
Deacons answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to tie the game,
then took the lead with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Two more unearned runs on two Caldwell errors in the sixth put Bloomfield
ahead 6-2. The Cougars scored a run in the seventh on an RBI single from
senior Kim Birmingham (Pine Hill, NJ/Overbrook), and loaded the bases
with two out. But a line-out by sophomore Carrie Flasphaler (Horseheads,
NY/Horseheads) ended the game. Jackson, Bodrog and Birmingham (pictured)
each had a pair of hits for Caldwell, which committed five errors in the
game.
Bloomfield took an early 1-0 lead in the second game with another unearned
run in the bottom of the first inning. Birmingham knotted the game at 1-1
with her first home run of the season to lead off the fourth inning. But the
Deacons replied in the bottom of the fourth with a home run by Kristin
Wilhelm to regain the lead, 2-1. Bloomfield kept the Cougars off the
scoreboard until the top of the seventh inning. Singles by sophomore
Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NJ/Waterloo) and Bodrog, followed by an
intentional walk, loaded the bases with no out. After Speno was thrown out
at home on an infield grounder, Birmingham hit a two-run single to give
Caldwell a 3-2 lead. The Cougars added another run on an RBI single by
junior Anna Dahl (Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) to go up 4-2.
Dahl, who went the distance in the circle, pitched a perfect seventh inning
to preserve the win. She allowed just two hits and two runs, one earned,
while walking two and striking out six to improve to 7-4 on the season. Dahl
also went 3 for 4 at the plate. Birmingham finished with four RBIs on the
day.
The Cougars host Wilmington College on Tuesday, Apr. 11, in another CACC
doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Caldwell Field.
