SMITHFIELD,
R.I. - The Caldwell College softball team won the first game 3-2, then
dropped the second 10-2 in a non-conference doubleheader with Northeast
Region foe Bryant University on Sunday at the Bryant Softball Complex. The
results give Caldwell a 7-7 record on the season, while the Bulldogs improve
to 1-7.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead in the first game when senior
Gina D'Amico (Turnersville, NJ/Washington Twp.), pictured, singled home
both senior Katie Jackson (Pennsville, NJ/Pennsville) and junior
Stacy Falkowski (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) with two out in the top of
the first. In the third inning, Falkowski's RBI single that scored sophomore
Alyssa Speno (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) put the Cougars up 3-0. The Bulldogs
scored runs in the third and sixth innings but could not tie the game off of
senior pitcher Jessica Saunders (Glen Burnie, MD/Archbishop
Spaulding). Saunders went the distance to improve to 3-2, allowing four hits
while striking out 10, including the final two batters of the game.
In the second game, Caldwell again scored first. Sophomore Carrie
Flasphaler (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) led off the top of the third with
a triple, then scored on a single by sophomore Nicole Bodrog (Mt.
Laurel, NJ/Lenape). Bodrog later scored on an error to give the Cougars a
2-0 lead. But the Bulldogs used six hits and three Caldwell errors to score
nine runs in the bottom of the third to blow the game open. They added a
10th run in the bottom of the fourth. Caldwell threatened in the top of the
fourth inning, loading the bases with no one out. But the Cougars were
unable to bring the runners home. Junior pitcher Anna Dahl
(Lindenwold, NJ/Camden Catholic) took the loss, allowing five runs in 2.0
innings of work.
D'Amico led the Cougars offensively on the day, going 4 for 7 with two RBI.
The Cougars resume their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference schedule on
Tuesday, Mar. 28, when they travel to Waterbury, Conn., to face Post
University. The doubleheader begins at 2:30 p.m.
